Global Grant #1873423 Tribute to Estela Gambelín, Rotary Club of Parana Plaza Argentina
In memory of Estela del Carmen Gambelín, Governor Elect for District 4945 who died on 24 February in Paraná Argentina, her colleagues from 17 countries initiated a USD$56,250 Global Grant project to upgrade the ophthalmology ward in the San Roque Mother and Child Hospital in the city of Parana, Entre Rios Argentina. Rotary Manningham, through matching Foundation Funds, contributed US$5,250.

The funds were used to purchase specialist equipment to allow early detection of childhood eye conditions that if undetected, could lead to blindness. Equipment purchased includes an ophthalmoscope that will allow doctors to control the presence of retinopathy of premature (ROP), preterm infants born between weeks 26 -35, which if not treated leads to blindness. The purchase of an additional equipment will allow the hospital to double the number of surgeries performed weekly. So through this Global Grant, Estela’s legacy will live on through the gift of sight to those children of her home town Parana, thanks to the Rotary Clubs and Districts around the world that joined together to initiate this project.
